Choose the right gutter for your home

A good rain gutter system is essential to protecting your home from water damage. A rusted, leaky rain gutter is can do as much damage as a leaky roof.

Finding the right gutter can be confusing. There are many styles and materials. Inexpensive can run one dollar a foot, while a copper gutter can run you twelve.

Where do you start?

Sectional vs. Seamless Gutters. This is the first step. As long as you are not scraping change to make this purchase, this part should be easy. You can buy sectional gutters at Menards or Lowes. The come in pieces and snapped or glued together. Watch out though. They are know for getting leaking joints over time.

Seamless gutters consist of a single gutter that is custom-sized to fit your roof. Since they are custom-made, they are more expensive, but they are far less likely to have leaks down the road. As a result seamless gutters have become the most popular option for new homes. Seamless gutters are usually trimmed on-site at your home by a contractor with a gutter machine. This is easier than transporting big gutter sections in a truck.

What material should you choose?

If you are in an extreme climate don't pick the cheap one dollar a foot vinyl. You could pay twelve dollars a foot for custom copper but that would be a big spend. Pick something that's middle of the road. Ask an experienced local contractor. They can help you select an affordable but durable option.

Aluminum runs about $2 a foot, while galvanized steel runs about $2 - $3 a foot. Aluminum comes in many colors, is light and rust free. Galvanized is durable and can last for 20 years.

Copper is the most expensive gutter material, costing $7-$12 per linear foot. It is strong and rust-proof.
Copper will also acquire a greenish patina as it ages, making it a popular choice for period homes.
If you prefer the shiny look of new copper, you can buy treated copper that stays as bright as a new penny.
Be aware, though, that copper gutters can be tricky to install, since it can discolor if it comes in contact with oils from your skin or work gloves.

K-Style versus half round gutters. K-style is more modern. Half round are used when updating traditional/historical homes.
